Arabians Enjoy Foxhunting
In November 2006, The Camden Hunt hosted a cubbing for the Palmetto Pony Club. Savannah Palm, daughter of Patricia and Gunnar Palm of Three Palms Arabians, participated in this activity. The educational program included foxhunting etiquette, demonstrations in cracking the whip and blowing the horn, and a tour of the kennels.
When The Camden Hunt held their Junior Day in December, Savannah had the opportunity to apply the skills she had learned about foxhunting. Mary Katherine Marshall on her straight Egyptian Arabian gelding, WH Manassas (El Halimaar x Bint Faras Azali) accompanied Savannah who rode her half Arabian mare Rosie in the second field. Both horses and riders had an eventful morning.
When it was discovered that the Arabians enjoyed the hunt, Gunnar Palm decided to introduce one of his young endurance horses to the sport. Citadel Batal (*Simeon Shai x Matrabbs Melody), a limited distance contender was ridden by Michel Gauthier on two hunts. It gave the pair an opportunity to bond before their first endurance ride which was run the closing day of the hunt.
On St. Patrick's Day 2007, Batal and Michel finished 2nd in the 30 mile Sand Hills Stampede in Patrick, South Carolina. From the results of this ride, apparently foxhunting is a great way to condition an endurance horse.
