Egyptians to Be Featured at Hampton Classic
September 2004
Labor Day weekend visitors to the Hampton Classic Horse Show were treated to a special presentation of the exquisite Egyptian Arabian horse. Whitehaven Plantation of Bishopville, South Carolina, Three Palms Arabians of Brookfield, Connecticut and Beshraka Egyptian Stud of Scarsdale, New York, exhibited four horses in halter, native costume and endurance attire. The purpose for exhibiting these horses was to demonstrate the beauty and versatility of the Arabian horse, and to dispel the myth that the breed tends to be "hot blooded" and "hard to handle".
The Hampton Classic is one of the largest and most prestigious Hunter/Jumper horse shows on the East Coast, with a guest list consisting of corporate executives, celebrities and politicians not unlike that of a red carpet event. With names such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Christie Brinkley, Rudy Guiliani and Michael Bloomberg in attendance, the Hampton Classic swarmed with luxury shopping, fine wine, fashion and some of the best equestrian displays in the country.
Each day in the Grand Prix arena, the horses and their handlers or riders "strutted their stuff" to a choreographed presentation from a selection of music from "Master and Commander" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" which was voiced over with the history of the Egyptian Arabian horse. Citadel Savanaah (Thee Desperado x Matrabbs Melody), a yearling filly owned by Three Palms Arabians was presented in hand on different days by Gunnar Palm and his nine year old daughter, Savannah Palm (for whom the filly is named). This was a perfect example of the Arabian horse's kind and gentle nature. Also shown in hand was JF Kamiilll (PVA Kariim x Ansata Serenada), an eight year old gelding, owned and shown by Jennifer Faga of Beshraka Egyptian Stud.
WH Bodacious (El Halimaar x RA Aneesa), an eleven year old stallion owned by Whitehaven Plantation, was exhibited by both Trisha Dingle, of North Branford, CT and Erica Flamand, of Guilford, CT, adorned in native costume, in separate performances. Bodacious even earned a spot on the front cover of a daily newspaper as he acclimated to the grounds and was surrounded by children on the day he arrived.
Timeless Dezign (Zedann x *Fatmaa), an eleven year old mare owned by Three Palms Arabians, was shown in native costume by Erica Flamand and in contemporary endurance tack by Gunnar Palm. This demonstrated the versatility and athleticism of the breed. Gunnar and Dezign compete in limited distance endurance riding and have captured two Top Tens in their first two rides. All four horses are exquisite examples of the Egyptian Arabian horse, and each gave an outstanding performance to the enjoyment of the crowd.
When the horses weren't exhibiting, they were receiving visitors at their stalls. Representatives from all three farms were on hand to answer questions, and a variety of information was available for people to take home. All the horses were a perfect ambassador for the breed. Hopefully, through education of the general public, the myths about the breed will be seen as just that and people will come to realize what a wonderful horse this is for the family, the competition ring and as a companion.
